Ultrasonic cavitation and pregnancy

Nowadays ultrasonic cavitation is being used to reduce body fat.
In the procedure the ultrasonic waves with frequency ranging from 5MHz to 40KHz are used.

It is contraindicated in pregnancy.
If a woman undergoes ultrasonic cavitation without knowing that she is pregnant, the possible outcomes are :
- In early weeks of pregnancy, there is possibility of miscarriage, birth defects of the fetus, defect in the immune system of the baby.
-If the woman gets exposed to ultrasound cavitation after first trimester of pregnancy, there is possibility of miscarriage, preterm labor, baby may have defective hearing, bone incarceration, defective immune system etc.
All these may not be seen in all fetuses but possibility of birth defects is there. There are no sufficient well controlled studies on it.
So if a woman underwent ultrasonic cavitation during pregnancy and if she wants to continue the pregnancy,
-She has to undergo regular antenatal checkups.
-Regular ultrasound examinations, especially at 11 weeks and TIFFA scan between 18 to 22 weeks.
By this any possible defect can be identified early and further action can be taken.
But it should be remembered that ultrasound may not detect all defects and some defects like impairment in hearing etc can not be diagnosed by ultrasound.
So examining the baby after birth is needed.

  2. Hello,
As there are no well controlled studies yet regarding it's effect when taken on different parts of the body, better to avoid completely during pregnancy I suppose.
    Take care.

  4. Hi,
What studies have been done to suggest the above birth defects/risk of miscarriage because another study claims there are no risky affects to the baby:

I am not devaluing anyone opinion I have just seen your page which contradicts he info on this page and would really like to know whether it's a risk in pregnancy

    Many thanks

  5. Hi, thanks for the response. I have written this article in 2013, at that time there were no many popular studies regarding this, and as per the available literature ultrasound cavitation was not claimed to be completely harmless in pregnancy. https://www.realself.com/question/there-adverse-side-effects-the-fetal-development-when-undergo-radiofrequency

But now a day, it is being claimed that this is not very much harmful. But still it is to be carefully considered only with treating Doctor's advice.
    Thank you.

And who would be the best to ask? My obgyn, a general doctor or a cavitation expert? Thank you!!
