Many people complains of scanty flow during periods or having menstrual flow only for one or two days as a complaint.
But usually having menstrual flow between 50ml to 80ml can be taken as normal only.
If menstrual flow is less than 50ml, that can be considered as scanty flow. If a woman passes more than 50 ml of menstrual flow in one or two days, that do not come under the category of scanty flow usually.
Scanty flow during periods is called as hypomenorrhea.
It can occur due to many causes like :
- Hormonal imbalance due to causes like poly cystic ovary disease, stress and strain, weight changes etc.
- Thyroid abnormalities.
- Prolactin level abnormalities.
- Anemia and deficiency of other nutrients.
-Diabetes.
-Uterine abnormalities like adhesions in Asherman's syndrome, previous surgeries over uterus leading to decreased surface area, hypoplasia of the uterus etc.
- Hereditary. Sometimes hypomenorrhea runs in families. This can be due to problem with endometrial vasculature.
- Some women may have spotting during their expected date of periods even being pregnant.
And they may think that as hypomenorrhea.
-Age related. Usually in perimenopausal age group hypomenorrhea can be seen.
