Fibroids are benign growths of the smooth muscle layer of the uterus. Also called as leiomyoma.
Usually estrogen predominance can lead to development of fibroids. Fibroids are of different types depending on their position.
-Fibroids presenting below the endometrial layer are sub mucosal fibroids
-Fibroids presenting in the cavity of the uterus are called intracavity fibroids.
-Fibroids in the middle of the muscular layer are called intramural fibroids.
-Fibroids presenting outside the muscular layer and covered by serosa are called subserosal fibroids.
- Sometimes subserous fibroids can present as pedenculated fibroids, hanging outside the uterus.
