Itching of genitalia

The possible causes for itching of the genitalia are :
-Vaginal infections leading to discharge, itching etc.
- Folliculitis etc can present with itching of labia majora.
Labia majora can get affected with other skin conditions also.
-Worm infestation of the intestines like pin worms. That can present with itching at the labia and anus.
- Sometimes allergy to soaps, deodorants etc can lead to itching.
- Allergy to material used in inner wear, improper washing and/or infrequent washing of inner wear.
- Moist environment at the genital area.
- Contact dermatitis for sanitary pads or tampons. Infrequent changing of pads.
- Stress and strain can lead to itching sometimes.
- Scratching can lead to itch-scratch vicious cycle.
-Malignancies of the genitalia.


Measures that can prevent itching:
-Avoiding products that can cause allergy.
-Taking bath twice a day, changing inner wear twice a day.
-Using cotton inner wear and keeping the genital area dry as per as possible.
-Avoiding harsh soaps and deodorants.
- Frequent changing of inner wear. - Scratching to be avoided.
-Taking antihelmentic medicine for dewormig.
-If the itching still persists, there is possibility of infection.
Better to consult gynecologist once and get examined.
Swab for culture and sensitivity from the area of itching can find out the causative organism and it's sensitivity to drugs.
