Effects of marijuna ( cannabis ) on fertility and pregnancy


Marijuna also known as cannabis, is derived from cannabis plant.
It is one of the addiction forming drug.
Apart from causing general side effects like decreased short term memory, impaired motor skills etc, it can affect the reproductive system also.

In males:
-It may reduce sperm count -It may decrease the sperm's ability to fertilize the ovum.
-It decreases the sexual drive with repeated use.

In females:
- It may disrupt the menstrual cycle by affecting hormonal levels.
-It can cause galactorrhea.






If the pregnant women consumes marijuana, it can lead to side effects like:
-Low birth weight of the babies.
-Babies with lower IQ, behavioral problems, difficulties in language comprehension, memory problems etc.
- Poor growth, physical abnormalities.
-Increased risk to get leukemia etc. So better to avoid this drug while planning for  pregnancy and during pregnancy.
If the woman becomes pregnant while taking marijuana, she has to stop the drug immediately.
And has to take regular antenatal checkups and ultrasound examinations during pregnancy to detect any abnormality at the earliest.
