In early pregnancy, sometimes low lying placenta can be seen.
Usually with progression of gestational age, the placenta will move upwards.
This is called as migration of placenta.
This can be seen in 90% of the cases.
Low lying placenta can be named only after 20 weeks of pregnancy.
-When the placenta completely covers the cervical os, that is called as complete placenta previa.
-When placenta partially covers the cervical os, it is called as partial placenta previa.
-When placental edge reaches the cervical os or lies within 2 cms of the os, that is called as marginal placenta previa.
-When the placental edge lies within 3.5cms of the cervical os, that is low lying placenta.
Usually migration is possible in cases, where:
-Before 20 weeks, the placenta is not covering or approaching the os. And placental edge not lying within 2.5 cms of the cervical os.
- Absence of risk factors like: Previous cesarean sections or any scars over the uterus.
Previous D&C.
Multiparty.
Maternal age above 35 years. History of smoking etc.
When low lying placenta is diagnosed in early pregnancy, regular followups scans are necessary to monitor the placental position.
If the low lying placenta persists, pregnancy to be continued carefully according to placenta previa guidelines.
